What is Freemium?
A pricing model offering a free tier with limits, plus paid plans that unlock more usage, features or quality.
Freemium is the dominant pricing model for consumer AI tools. You get a free tier that works but is limited, plus paid plans that remove the limits. In AI products the free tier is usually constrained in specific ways: a daily or monthly message cap, access only to a smaller or older model, slower responses during peak times, watermarked or lower-resolution image and video output, or missing features like file upload and API access. Paid tiers (commonly around $8 to $30 per month for individual plans) unlock the flagship model, higher limits, and priority speed. Free tiers exist because inference costs money on every request, so providers ration it. Some free products also reserve the right to train on your inputs, while paid and business tiers often exclude that by default.
Example
ChatGPT's free tier gives limited access to the flagship model and falls back to a smaller one when you hit the cap, while the Plus plan raises limits and unlocks extra features for a monthly fee.
Why it matters
Free tiers are fine for testing, but compare what the paid tier actually unlocks (which model, what limits, data-training policies) before judging a tool by its free experience. Browse the AI tools directory or the model leaderboard to put it into practice.
