What is AI Overviews?
Google's AI-generated answers at the top of search results. They cite sources and change how clicks flow to websites.
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear above the traditional links for many searches. Google's Gemini models read relevant pages, synthesize an answer, and show it with citation links to the sources used. They appear most often on informational questions and less on transactional or highly sensitive queries. The practical effect for websites is fewer clicks on some queries, because users get the answer without visiting a page, though cited sources can still receive traffic and visibility. For publishers and SEO, this shifts the goal from just ranking to being selected and cited: clear direct answers, structured content, original information, and strong topical authority all help. Google has expanded Overviews across more queries and countries since launching them in 2024, and added a fuller AI Mode for conversational search.
Example
Searching "how long does cold brew last in the fridge" often shows an AI Overview with a synthesized answer and two or three cited sites, pushing the regular results further down the page.
Why it matters
If your business depends on search traffic, AI Overviews change where clicks go. Content should be structured to earn citations, not just rankings, and tools that track AI citations are becoming as relevant as rank trackers.
