What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Optimizing content to be cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini — the AI-era complement to SEO.

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making your content the source that AI answer engines cite. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews answer a question, they retrieve web pages, pick passages, and cite a handful of sources. GEO aims to get your pages into that handful. The tactics overlap with good SEO but shift emphasis: direct, quotable answers near the top of a page, clear headings, factual claims with specifics, schema markup, being mentioned on sites AI systems trust (like Reddit, Wikipedia, and industry publications), and building recognizable expertise around an entity or topic. Measurement also changes, from rank positions to citation frequency and share of voice inside AI answers. GEO complements rather than replaces SEO, since answer engines still lean heavily on traditional search indexes for retrieval.

Example

A software review site rewrites its comparison pages with a concise verdict paragraph up top, adds structured data, and starts appearing as a cited source when users ask Perplexity which tool to choose.

Why it matters

A growing share of product research now happens inside AI chat instead of search results pages. Brands that show up in AI answers capture that demand; those that only rank in traditional results miss it. Browse the AI tools directory or the model leaderboard to put it into practice.
